Project Children was started in 1975 by members of the Gaelic Cultural Society who wished to assist the blameless children who had become victims of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Money was raised to bring six children, Protestant and Catholic, from Belfast to the United States to spend a six week vacation from “troubles” back home.

Since its inception, more than 16,000 children have experienced a summer of peace and tranquility in the United States. The program is primarily focused on children between the ages of ten and fourteen. The past few summers we have also brought young adults who are doing internships in various areas of law, politics, science and building trades.

Children are selected by teachers from three categories -- Catholic, Protestant, and the relatives of political prisoners.

The cost for each child to participate in Project Children is paid by contributions from individuals, groups, and organizations. The child does not contribute to the cost of the vacation.

Project Children does not profess to have the answer to bring peace to Northern Ireland. It does, however, seek to show the children of Northern Ireland that it is possible to live together in peace, with freedom and dignity.
